Terry Carlson

Terry Carlson spent more than three decades as the executive director of the John Howard Society (NL), where he promoted just and humane responses to the causes and consequences of crime and helped to significantly expand the agency and its programs and services. His work has been recognized with local, regional, and national awards. Born and raised in St. John’s, he holds M.A. and M.S.W. degrees from Memorial University of Newfoundland and a Ph.D. in criminology from the University of Manchester, England. Carlson’s long-standing interest in research and criminal justice history led him to publish several works on the correctional system. He has also taught at Memorial, volunteered with a number of community organizations, and worked contractually for the provincial Department of Justice. He lives in St. John’s with his wife, Barb.
